How is the net metering bill calculated in Pakistan after March 2025?

Imported units (grid → your home) are billed at the regular domestic slab rates of your DISCO (e.g. for unprotected: 1-100 units at Rs 23.59, 101-200 at Rs 30.07, and so on up the slab table). Exported units (your solar → grid) are credited at the National Average Power Purchase Price, which NEPRA pegged at roughly Rs 10/unit in the March 2025 decision. Net payable = import bill − export credit (clamped at zero). All applicable taxes (Electricity Duty 1.5%, GST 18%, TV fee, NJ surcharge, Section 235 income tax for non-filers) apply on top.

Why did the net metering buyback rate change from 1:1 to ~Rs 10?

Under the old 2017 policy, exported units were netted off against your bill at the same retail tariff slab you would have paid, effectively a 1:1 unit swap worth Rs 35-48/unit. NEPRA's March 2025 decision argued this overcompensated solar customers at the cost of grid-only customers (cross-subsidy) and instead pegged the buyback rate to the National Average Power Purchase Price (NAPPP), roughly Rs 10/unit. New net metering applications post-March 2025 use the new rate; older agreements may run their original term under transitional rules, check your agreement letter.

What is the difference between LESCO, IESCO, K-Electric net metering?

The buyback formula is the same nationally (Rs ~10/unit NAPPP). What differs is the import-side tariff (each DISCO has slightly different per-unit slab rates and surcharges) and Time-of-Use (ToU) eligibility, K-Electric, LESCO and IESCO have peak / off-peak ToU on larger connections. What does the green bi-directional meter show?

Two readings: import (kWh you took FROM the grid) and export (kWh your solar sent TO the grid). The DISCO bills you for net difference each month, plus the buyback credit. Take photos of both readings around the same date each month so you can spot meter or billing errors quickly.

Is net metering still worth it in Pakistan in 2026?

Yes, but the math is tighter than pre-2025. A 5kW grid-tied system in Lahore now pays back in roughly 5-7 years (down from 3-4 years on the old policy) on a household with a Rs 18,000-30,000 monthly bill. How do I apply for net metering in Pakistan?

Step 1: get your solar installed (3-15 kW eligible). Step 2: get an AEDB-licensed solar vendor to submit the application to your DISCO with system specs, single-line diagram, electrical safety certificate. Step 3: DISCO inspects (1-2 weeks usually). Step 4: bi-directional meter installed. Step 5: net metering agreement signed (3-year term, auto-renewable). Total time: 4-8 weeks in 2026, depending on DISCO backlog. Do I pay GST on the exported units?

No. The export credit is treated as a reduction in your bill, not as income, so GST applies only to the imported-side energy charges and surcharges before the credit is subtracted. Some customers see GST calculated on gross import then credit subtracted afterward, the math comes out almost identical either way; our tool uses the standard order.

Are these rates exact?

Estimates are accurate to within ±5%. NEPRA notifies new tariffs and FPA / QTR adjustments quarterly; we update this tool when a new notification drops.
